Shading

I've been trying to decide how I want to do my shading in my illustrations. I usually do shapes with a darker color and tone it down with opacity. But after doing a few tutorials I started playing with gradients more. I think I like the blue robot shading best - which is my usual method.

Which do you prefer?

I'm working on a robot art set. I love robots. I should have more to share over the weekend :)

Update: I've decided why do I need to pick one? Use them whenever they work best. Duh!

So cute kelly! Hmm I like the darker and bolder shadows of the blue but I like the highlights of the green. Sorry, not very helpful, I know.. lol :o)

Thanks Alicia. Actually that does help. I agree, I think the highlights are more prominent in the green with the gradient. I need to tweak the brightness of the highlights on the blue bot to make it more visible - that might help.

I also do my shading with solid then opacity method. But sometimes gradients would give you a different feeling, a softer look.

I like them both. I think it depends on how you want your robot to look like.

Great pratice, I have to find some time to do this too :-)

Hi ya Pilarcat. Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. I agree. Both methods seem to get the job done.

I am following you on your blog and love the doodle a day you have going. That was really inspiring. Keep it up. I love what you are doing. Very cute and fun.
